Ashford Borough Council – Strategic Housing and Employment Land Availability Assessment (SHELAA).

A Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA) is a requirement of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and is seen as an important part of the evidence base for Local Plans. The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) was published in March 2012 and requires Local Planning Authorities to:

‘prepare a Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment to establish realistic assumptions about the availability, suitability and the likely economic viability of land to meet the identified need for housing over the plan period.’

The NPPF and new Planning Guidance released in August 2013 also requires LPAs to assess the ‘existing and future supply of land available for economic development’, with such reviews being ‘undertaken at the same time, or combined with, Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessments’
